Storing Youth in a Bottle: Five Tips for Skincare in Your Twenties

You’ve just got past the horrors of teenage acne, and are probably feeling pretty good about your skin. Your twenties are the one time when you can let your health slide—but if you do, you’ll have to pay for it later. Skincare is one area where this is especially true. Roll out the red carpet for your skin now, and you may get to keep that vigorous, healthy glow till you’re fifty. Play rough and ready, and get mistaken for fifty when you’re just barely 35. It starts with something even simpler: what you put under your skin.


To your skin, water is life. Not only does it flush away unwanted poisons, it also keeps your skin moist, hydrated, and glowing—from the inside out. Dark chocolate is good too, but not the sweet variety: sugar can actually do a number on your skin and leave you looking several years than you actually are. Choose high quality dark chocolate, with minimal sugar and other additives.

Sun Protection

It used to be that the picture of youthful health was a ruddy faced tan. While vitamin D is as good as ever—and an outdoor life is full of its own rewards—we’ve discovered that the sun is not the all-good motif we had imagined it. Overexposure to the sun can age your skin like nothing else does, and leave you with some nasty skin cancers to boot. So use sun protection ointment, preferably zinc-based. Keep a hat available, and consider wearing sun glasses when you’re out in particularly harsh sun. The skin around your eyes is the most delicate skin on your face and will be the first to show age, and that little bit of extra protection can do wonder for it.
