One out of five Americans develops skin cancer. The biggest cause is the sun. As UVA burns your skin, UVB wreaks long-lasting havoc (causing cancer and killing skin cells).
Guess how long it takes before the sun starts attacking your skin? You guessed right . . . 15 minutes. Only. The risk remains, even on a dull dreary winter morning, but it is worse in summer.
However, when the sun is not on a destruction spree, it does lots of wonderful things. From increasing brain function to lowering blood pressure and cholesterol levels, and boosting immunity, you can’t rule the sun out when counting nature’s best gifts to mankind.
The sun pushes sarcoma to remission, and helps fight breast cancer, too… Who would’ve thought?
So, what should you do to get a tan, have fun at the beach, and pack in all the other benefits of the sun without worrying?
Make Sunscreen Your Best Friend
Guess what? If your friend never cares for sunscreen but you use less than adequate sunscreen, you’re sailing in the same boat.
According to The American Academy of Dermatology sunscreen FAQs, you need to use a broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30 and above.
Concurring, Skin Cancer Foundation says, “SPF 15 blocks 93% of UVB rays, then SPF 30 blocks 97% while SPF 50 blocks 98%. Higher SPF sunscreens, even 100 will protect you a wee 1% more than a sunscreen with SPF 50.”
For an active day, use a "water-resistant" sunscreen but for efficiency use it as often as you would a normal sunscreen i.e. every hour and a half.
2. Opt for a Lightweight Skincare Routine
There are so many summer skincare tips including reducing the number of products you use in summer to allow your skin some breathing space, including avoiding comedogenic products, and replacing heavy cleanser (oils and creams) with gentle, lightweight skin care products for men (face wash and a moisturizer) with clean natural ingredients.
These will leave your skin smooth, refreshed and feeling light.
3. Moisturize often
“…but why would anyone moisturize in summer—with all the sweating—skin is always wet, you know? It must be okay to skip the moisturizing step…” Wrong! It might be hot and humid but skin experts recommend sticking to your awesome daily washing and moisturizing habit. A moisturizer will nourish and reestablish the outermost layer of your skin. This is good news because this layer protects you from chemicals, irritants, pollutants, and loss of skin moisture.
4. Shower LESS!
This is not a ticket to poor personal hygiene but seriously… you need to resist the urge to shower every chance you get. It's certainly one of the little pleasures of summer but it's not good for your skin. If you must, keep them short—four to five minutes. And, make it cold or lukewarm because hot water dries the skin and that might lead to skin irritation, inflammation, and even summer eczema.
5. Dress in protective clothing
It’s tempting to walk around in vests and shorts all summer long but if and when you can, try long sleeves, and pants to limit exposure to direct sunlight. Wear wide-brim hats to the beach and invest in a good pair of UV protection sunglasses.
6. Spend more time under shades
If you can avoid being in the sun from 10am to 2pm, that’d be great. Use an umbrella if you’ll be exposed to direct sunlight for more than 15 minutes, and shelter under a shade as long as possible.
